- conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie
- Example: "I don't want to have a snow day," she yelled at her brother.
Dialogue Tag:
- describes a manner of speaking
- comes before or after dialogue
- Examples: said, asked, questioned
Purpose of Dialogue:
- to propel the action
- to reveal aspects of a character
- to provoke a decision

Figurative Language

Imagery - using language that appeals to the five senses in order to help the reader imagine what is being described.
Literal - words that do not deviate from their defined meaning.
Figurative - non-literal - words, phrases, or groups of words that exaggerate or alter the usual meanings of the component words.
Simile - compare two unlike things using the words like or as.
Metaphor - directly compares two unlike things by saying something actually is something else.
Idiom - an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its words; a figure of speech.
Onomatopoeia - a word that imitates or suggests the sound it describes.
Hyperbole - a figure of speech which is an extreme exaggeration.
Personification - assigning human traits of characteristics to nonhuman things.
Alliteration - the repetition of the same beginning sound on the stressed syllable in the words near each other in a phrase.
Assonance - the repetation of vowel sounds in a series of words that do not rhyme.
Oxymoron - a phrase in which two terms seemingly contradict each other.
